Clinical Detail
How we approach this treatment.
Depth and protocol selection
Needle depth is chosen per zone rather than per face. Finer depths suit the forehead, periorbital skin and dehydrated or reactive skin, while deeper settings are reserved for textural scarring on the cheeks. Depth, pass count and product pairing are all recorded so each session builds on the last rather than repeating it.
Collagen induction timeline
The controlled micro channels trigger a wound healing cascade: inflammation in the first days, proliferation across weeks two to four and remodelling for up to three months. Because new collagen is laid down slowly, the visible change from a course appears well after the final session, which is why we review at twelve weeks.
Where it fits alongside other treatments
Microneedling improves skin quality and scarring. It does not restore volume or soften muscle driven lines, so patients with combined concerns are often better served by needling for texture alongside a separate plan for structure. Prescription home care before a course also meaningfully improves the result.

Questions
Frequently asked.
How many sessions will I need?
A course of 3 to 6 sessions, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, gives optimal results depending on the concern.
Is there downtime?
Mild redness and sensitivity are normal for 24 to 72 hours. Most patients return to normal activities the next day.
Does microneedling hurt?
Topical anaesthetic is applied for around 20 minutes beforehand, so most patients describe a vibrating, scratchy sensation rather than pain. Bonier areas such as the forehead and jawline are more noticeable.
Is it better than a dermaroller at home?
Yes, and it is safer. Clinical devices use sterile single use cartridges at a controlled depth and speed. Home rollers drag across the skin, cannot be properly sterilised and can worsen scarring and pigmentation.
Will it help acne scarring?
Rolling and boxcar scars respond well over a course. Deep ice pick scars usually need combined treatment and we will say honestly at consultation what percentage improvement is realistic.
Is microneedling safe for darker skin tones?
Yes. Because it does not use heat or light, the risk of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation is low compared with many laser options, provided post care and SPF are followed.
How much is microneedling in Belfast?
Pricing depends on the area and whether the protocol is combined with PRP or prescription skin revision. We confirm cost at consultation, with course pricing available.
Can I have it if I am on Roaccutane?
Not while taking it, and not for six months afterwards. We will build a skin health plan for the interim instead.
